The Ren and Stimpy Reboot Leak Review (SPOILERS)

Folks, I'm not gonna lie

This is gonna be a hard pill for me to stomach

Hell, writing his review makes me feel like I'm Lenny Baxter from the Powerpuff Girls

or even worse, Mr Enter

But I'm just gonna say for the record that I'm not trying to dog on anyone that doesn't deserve it

especially not the artists


But I love Ren and Stimpy

My love for Ren and Stimpy amongst shows like it lift me up when I'm about to kill myself. Ren and Stimpy is a phenomenal show despite it's shitty creator, and has influenced almost every show on the planet when it came out; and when shows that try to detract and mimic it's whimsy like Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, Bonkers, Shnookums and Meat, and Eek the Cat came on, they were faded into obscurity (although sweaty 90's kids in their mother's basements keep bringing them up). To me, Ren and Stimpy defined the 90's, not some "fakey and zany, animaney" bullcrap. Animaniacs was just doing what Tiny Toons did and never branched out from doing anything artistic and different (writer driven shows, am I right). Animaniacs also brainwashed people into thinking that anvils are the classic staple of the golden age when the anvil was only used 10 or 5 times in few cartoons

Ren and Stimpy was breaking new grounds, more freeform and deranged expressions, a hybrid of Hanna Barbera and Bob Clampett that was never seen before the show aired, and digital coloring in the year 1992 starting Season 2

So when I saw the leak for Ren and Stimpy's Reboot, I at first was curious

But then I became furious


Ren and Stimpy is supposed to be a totally traditionally animated show with whimsical golden book backgrounds, emphasis on action, freeform expressions, voice actors, gags that bang you on the head, unpredictability, unabashed meanness, APM Music, less dialogue, amazing dialogue, and power to the artists

The Ren and Stimpy Reboot has rigged animation, an over complicated background system that's trying to look like The Mighty B!'s Backgrounds (It works for TMB as apposed to this shitty reboot), emphasis on dialogue, stiff expressions, unfunny comedians and celebs with little to no voice actors, writer's speak, predictability that kills you, passive aggressive kindness, composition with some APM, more dialogue, unfunny dialogue, and the status quo back to the writers

It's the 80's all over again

Now lets look at the episodes I watched

The Episodes I watched that were leaked were "Aw Hell No" and "Squatters"

Aw Hell No

Yeah, what a charming title

Because the old show definitely needed to have titles that sound like Joss Whedon character expressing anger towards some passerby


The Plot is that Stimpy kills Ren, Stimpy goes to Heaven but Ren goes to Hell, Ren is happy to become king of hell but Stimpy wants Ren to come to Heaven with him only for Stimpy to get him and then be sent back to reality because God made a mistake. It ends with Stimpy restarting the episode all over again

This sounds like a worse version of a Billy and Mandy plot, and it would be 10 times funnier there because that show was ran by artists

JUST LIKE THE ORIGINAL REN AND STIMPY

But no, this was written by some hackjob College Humor Comedian whackjob that written for Teen Titans Go and The Rugrats Reboot

Jenny Jaffe

Yay, more mediocrity for this god forsaken planet

They could've gotten writers that know what good writing or how to write for cartoons like Richard Pursel, Eric Trueheart, David Steven Cohen even

Or they could've gotten BOB FUCKING CAMP!!!!!

Who was gonna be the HEAD SHOWRUNNER ON THIS REBOOT BUT LEFT DUE TO CREATIVE DIFFERENCES WITH ROBYN FUCKING BYRD

Fuck Robyn Byrd

It's bad that she got raped by John K, and for that I'm sorry she has to go through that

But how do you look at Bob Camp, one of the FUCKING PEOPLE THAT WORKED ON THE ORIGINAL SHOW AND IT'S MOST FAMOUS EPISODES, and say "get out you old hack"

Even Bill Wray hated the reboot when it was first leaked earlier this year

None of the veterans on the show like it

I bet even the artists on the reboot hated it too



 But I digress

The humor for the reboot is just "we mention joke and talk about stuff throughout the show amongst some gross out" followed by "lets have wiseass dialogue about unmentioned things that aren't funny" topped with "unfunny topped up dialogue with no funny gags or even an interesting face"

It doesn't feel like Ren and Stimpy at all


The Mighty B! is a script driven show that has a character that talks verbosely about things, but has more moments with character driven acting where Bessie and Happy do things like jump through cliffs, mess with a time machine, and even go through an obstacle course

and guess what, Erik Wiese and his crew know when to have Bessie shut up and take part in some top-tier cartoony action that even John Kricfalusi loved

Way to shit on what made Ren and Stimpy great Jennifer Jaffe'em ups

As Tuck from MLAATR would say "What a fine mess you got us into Jennifer"

The Animation was terrible

Big Star productions used to be top tier animators back in the 90's and 2000's working on stuff like Space Goofs, Brandy and Mr Whiskers, Ren and Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon (which isn't that bad but not good), and El Super Beasto

Their 2010's work always confused me so, Dan Vs and Mixels were the only good things of that decade that they worked on, everything else was some dialogue driven writers speak unfunny mess that offers no creativity except for "Live-Action show but not interesting in the slightest"

Bojack Horseman is not an interesting cartoon character

Only hack-jobs who only draw realistic humans could get a job on that show


Big Star's animation on the reboot was bad



Snipple sucks

The Only Good things they've done were Ducktales 2017 and The Looney Tunes Cartoons


TLC was artist driven and had really great animation despite the budget crunching for shit like Barbie, Velma, and The Flash


The Humor in The R&S Reboot sucks, it's just the same dialogue and humor you'd expect from any adult tv show that doesn't curse

I felt a less cynical but equally painful Velma energy in this show's dialogue, and it still feels cynical

Hurray, another throw away 4th wall break that will discourage anyone from making any 4th wall breaks


Chowder does every 4th wall break these days better, Chowder is the untrumpable king of Breaking the 4th Wall


Look Reboot and Jennabelle Jaffe-off, it's not enough to add a throw away quip about "incidental characters", you also have to have a punchline

Just saying something is something isn't funny

Maybe say have more visual gags instead of characters telling

You know "Show don't tell"


The only cartoon I know that can get away with telling and not showing is Sam and Max Freelance Police, and that's because the comic series was always had that madcap writing in it amongst the world was always just as crazy as Sam and Max


Ren and Stimpy's world is just as crazy but is more somber, but that's because the Spumco guys never wanted to have their world be too chaotic or even have madcap dialogue like in S&M

Ren and Stimpy's world was almost like The Looney Tunes except more demented



So yeah, a 4th wall break like in the shitty reboot is just forgettable and cynically added in

No whimsy, or just a whimsy that total losers would be ok with



Not to mention that the jokes in the episode are very forgettable and often are just like every clean cut adult tv show that doesn't curse

It just mentions that something happened or that they mention something that would seem out of character for the CHARACTER!!

In other words, it's writer's speak


This is just one of the many problems that The Ren and Stimpy Reboot does

It's just like The PPG Reboot except there's more effort put into the R&S reboot, but unnecessary effort that makes it blend in rather than stand out (humiliating that the PPG Reboot is storyboard driven but sucks)


The Backgrounds feel so heavily detailed and the camera shakes more than the old show (Cans Without Labels at least there was charm to the shaky camera)

All in all, the episode was a bad one

and I didn't even mention how mediocre celebs like Monet X Change and Sam Richardson reared their overrated and unfunny asses into this reboot

Sam Richardson is in every fucking thing now

Just wait for the Ren and Stimpy episode with local Zionists, Andrew Rannells and Amy Schumer

Also cameos of characters that were supposed to be one off gags, I LOVE THAT!!!!

At least with Spongebob doing that it could be that they love those characters

It was mostly done in content for those characters where in The Ren and Stimpy Reboot, they did it to throw in characters to make people say "hey remember this guy"

It's just unfunny, obnoxious, and blends in with almost every safe and boiled down adult show that doesn't curse as much as Hazbin Hotel (IDC for that show anyway)

Anyway, onto it's sister episode 


Squatters


This episode is just like the last episode except more forgettable


Snipple did this one and it's garbage


but the jokes weren't that funny and were "Animaniacs, Pinky and The Brain I won't take your abuse" levels of Stimpy standing up for himself


I'm not saying Stimpy shouldn't always stand up for himself, but Stimpy is supposed to be stupid enough to trust Ren especially since when Ren slaps Stimpy, it hits a nerve ending that makes Stimpy happy

It's when you do something very abhorrent that he distrusts you as seen in Adult Party Cartoon (Which is MILES better than this safe, bland, watered down version of Ren and Stimpy)

All the plot is is Ren and Stimpy trying to get rid of this talkative Amy Sedaris character that isn't funny and just talks as things happen


It's just not funny, it's just talkative and forgettable

It's the type of shit you'd see in Shorty McShort's shorts except more safer


All in all it was forgettable

It just so happens that this reboot is everything I hate about reboots and more

ruining what made the original great

adding in unnecessary cameos just because

misunderstanding the original show's art style and animation

changing the sense of humor the original had into mush

and trying to be hip by adding camera effects, special effects, and a hip intro that ruins the show's general feel


It's humiliating that Adult Party Cartoon (AKA The Lost Episodes of Ren and Stimpy) is better at understanding Ren and Stimpy's characters despite pushing for more edgy humor to compete with Family Guy and South Park



This reboot stinks

They limit the expressions and freeform designs so that people aren't complaining that it's "overacted" or "overanimated" or even "overexpressive" it is (Yet Gumball's later seasons, which are painfully unfunny, can get away with their lazy expressions)

They add more dialogue in places where the characters should be taking part in weird cartoony Hijinx straight out of Bob Clampett cartoons

They have the budget to make the backgrounds too overly detailed but not enough money to have Ren and Stimpy be lively and freeform

among other things, they have Ren and Stimpy live in a friggin set in stone house rather than wherever they want to go to like in the original

Of course there's gonna be wise asses that tell me "They're purposely making it bad to piss John K off" which if that's true than they would revel in it or at the very least say "Fuck you John K" in the credits


It looks more like they're trying to make Ren and Stimpy but make it writer-driven and sterilized. That sucks because there are talented people who love Ren and Stimpy like Owen Fishback working on this and they're talents are limited by the power set in by hackjob writers like Jennifuck Jaffeabash

fuck you Jenny Jaffe and Fuck you again Robyn Byrd


There's none of the quirks that made the original show great

they try to add lame piano compositions where there should be music APM

The cast members are mostly celebrities and comedians that aren't that funny, there's no Harris Peet, No Cheryl Chase, not even any Melissa Fahn, Sharon Mack, or even any Rudolph Porter


Look, instead of Monet X or Sam Richardson, have Gary Anthony Williams play both God and Satan so that the audience doesn't get more furious that Sam Richardson doesn't have every voice role ever

That way you can have a black God and Satan and it will be funny

As for Amy Sedaris, sure she's funnier in stuff like Spongebob or Chicken Little, but she sounds more like Megan Mullaly

Get Laraine Newman, she would fit that role and be bareable



All in all, This reboot of a beloved cartoon from the 90's was a mistake as with every reboot except for Superhero, Scooby Doo, and Golden Age Cartoon reboots


With those reboots, at least you can separate them from the originals and appreciate them for doing their own thing (especially if that's what they're going for)

The Ren and Stimpy reboot wants me to see this as the original show if not "Ren and Stimpy written to fit the current era" and to that I say shame


I declare this worse than Games Animation Ren and Stimpy

worse than Adult Party Cartoon

worse than Cans Without Labels

don't even watch it when it comes out

and if you really want to watch it, pirate that shit

besides, Paramount supports Israel anyway
